Official statistics show up pension age plans

Figures published this week by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) confirm the contention of the '68 is too late' campaign that many people in the UK are already retiring straight into ill health - even before most of the planned increases to the retirment age kick in.

The report said a 16 year old male in the north east of England could expect 45 years of healthy working. In other words he would be unfit by the age of 61.

Even in the usually more affluent south east of England men only stay healthy to the age of 67.

The stats also reveled that large numbers of extra people are working past the state retirement age.

Most of the men who work to an older age are in managerial or professional jobs. Most of the women are doing low paid jobs like cleaning.

This backs up our belief that well-off people can retire when they like - while the poor have to work until they drop.
